In the old days, it was rare to find process improvement initiatives working in the administrative areas of a company: Human Resources, Legal, Corporate Reporting, Financial Control, etc. But today, there are many examples of companies saving money focusing process improvement on some of these more transactional areas.
We've said to customers many time, "We can improve any process, but what is it worth to you?" We find as companies improve their more mainstream functional areas, the relatively untouched administrative and back office processes start to become barriers to speed and responsiveness. As these "rocks in the pond" surface, they frequently become the target of process improvement initiatives.
